6 July 2017 – Malaysia 7s Under 20 team finished 6th out of 10 competing countries at the Asia Rugby 7s Under 20 at the Kings Park Stadium, Hong Kong. Malaysia lost to the neighbor, Singapore in the Plate Final match 5 – 19.

Malaysia had mix first day. They started strong as they overcame The Philippines 26 – 0 in the first match. Zulmajdi Kama Razali is the Malaysia hero in this match as he contributed 11 points from a try and 3 conversions.

Malaysia lost the next two matches to Chinese Taipei and Sri Lanka. Malaysia unable to match Chinese Taipei physical and speed as they had a much better side and stormed to 26 – 0 lead in the first half. Malaysia improved in the second half and managed to get a try from Muhammad Haikal Ibrahim and a successful conversion by Zulmajdi Kama Razali. Taipei retook the control of the game with another try before Mohd Hafizuddin Amin Mohd Akhir added Malaysia second try to close the gap. Chinese Taipei sealed the deal with Keng-Chen CHOU try in the last minutes of the match.

Malaysia hopes to make it into Cup semi final suffered the blow as they lost to the 2016 champion, Sri Lanka in the third game. Malaysia played their heart out but Sri Lanka burst of speed proved to be too much for the Young Hibiscus. Malaysia lost 5 – 26 with Nazrin Aiman Ahmad Taufiq scored Malaysia only try, 3 minutes into the second half.

Malaysia started the second day on a positive note. They overcame China 17 – 5 in a very nervy game. Malaysia stormed into the lead with Muhammad Safiy and Nazrin Aiman try in the first four minutes. However, Guiyong Wang tries in the last play of the first half brought China back into the game. Muhammad Safiy Md Said became the hero as he scored his second personal try to kill the game. Zulmajdi Kama Razali completed his fifth conversions of the tournament to make it 17 – 5 win for Malaysia.

Malaysia finished third in the group A behind Sri Lanka and Chinese Taipei. They met Thailand in the plate semi final and produced the come back of the tournament. Malaysia down 0 – 14 in the first half with Thailand high line put too much pressure on Malaysia. Nazrin Aiman Ahmad Taufiq try started Malaysia come back. Muhammad Safiy Md Said completed the conversions to make it 7 – 14. Muhammad Faris Abdullah scored Malaysia second try with 20 seconds to go to let Zulmajdi Kama Razali completed the conversions to level the scored. The game gets into the first extra time of the tournament with Malaysia retained their great second half performance. Malaysia grabbed their winning try through Mohd Hafizuddin Amin Mohd Akhir try two minutes into the extra time as they capitalized on Thailand mistake deep into their own half. Malaysia through to Plate final with 19 – 14 win over Thailand.

Malaysia had the best start of the tournament in the Plate final against Singapore. Nazrin Aiman once again used his speed and neat footwork to score Malaysia first try in the first 30 seconds of the match. However, things started to go down with Malaysia as Singapore scored 2 tries and completed 2 conversions. Singapore lead 14 – 5 at the end of the first half. Malaysia did everything they could in the second half but Singapore stood firm. Singapore managed to capitalise on Malaysia eagerness to attack and scored their third try of the game through Isaac Goh Tze Hng. Singapore beat Malaysia 21 – 5 to finish fifth.

The host, Hong Kong is the winner for Asia Rugby 7s Under 20 as they trashed last year champion, Sri Lanka, 36 – 0 in the final. Chinese Taipei finished third with 19 – 12 win over South Korea.
