6 July 2017 – With only a month of preparation, the Malaysia Under 20 Women teams unable to provide much challenge to other powerhouse nation in the Asia Rugby 7s Under 20 at the Kings Park Stadium, Hong Kong. The team is the combination of players only from Sabah and Sarawak. Malaysia won 1 out of 6 matches in this 2 days tournament.

Malaysia opened the tournament on a positive note as they overcame Uzbekistan in the first match of the tournament. Christini Johanes, Claire Gabriel, Imidah Ibrahim completed 3 tries for Malaysia while Divine Juvinol completed the only conversions in the match for Malaysia. Malaysia overcame Uzbekistan 17 – 5.

Malaysia lost the next two matches on the first day. They had their chance against India but unable to replicate the same form they had in the first match. Ruchi Shetty and Swapna Oroan try sealed the deal as India beat Malaysia 10 – 0.

Hong Kong proved to be too much for Malaysia. They were better in all aspect of the game especially in term of physical. 4 tries and a conversion gave Singapore 22 – 0 lead in the first half. They added 4 more tries and another two conversions as Hong Kong battered Malaysia ladies 46 – 0. Rosanna Wright played the important role for Hong Kong win with 2 tries.

Malaysia started the second day against the champion, China. Malaysia suffered the biggest loss of the tournament. Malaysia lost 0 – 52 to China. Huimin Zhou had an outstanding game against Malaysia with 3 tries.

Thailand who finished runner-up steam rolled Malaysia in our 5th match. Thailand scored 6 tries with 2 successful conversions. They beat Malaysia 34 – 0.

Malaysia ended the tournament with another defeat. Singapore who had a better preparation as they too joined the ELITE 7s in MBPJ proved to be too strong. 4 tries and 3 conversions put Malaysia to bed as Singapore won the match 26 – 0.

The Malaysia team should be able to perform much better if they had more time to prepare for the tournament.
